An introduction to SEO
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a form of digital marketing.
It is the process of structuring a website so that its pages are
found, read and indexed by search engines in the most effective way
possible.
A good SEO strategy is composed of numerous techniques and
tactics. From keyword research & competitor benchmarking to
on-page technical changes, content relevancy and link building.
The two primary factors that drive good SEO and a website's
ability to rank well in search results are relevancy and
popularity. How relevant is your web page to your targeted keywords
and how popular is that page within the internet community?
Relevancy
Let's start with relevancy. All you have to do is look at
Google's mission statement to understand the importance of
relevancy when it comes to ranking well:
"Google's mission is to organize
the world's information and make it universally accessible and
useful"
Google want users to easily find what they are searching for,
that is why each and every page of your website should deliver
something to the customer. Whether that is by answering a question
a customer could have searched for or by delivering a specific
product or service they have searched for. No matter what keyword
you're targeting, the web page should deliver exactly what the
customer expects.
There are multiple ways to let Google and other search engines
know your page is relevant. By including your targeted keywords in
the web pages title tag, image alt tags and throughout the content,
helps ensure your page ranks well for the given keywords.
Popularity
Some SEO experts believe that "popularity" accounts for up to
70% of search engine algorithms. Search engines determine the
quality of content by seeing how many inbound links it has, and
more recently have been taking social signals into account. If you
found a webpage particularly helpful or interesting, wouldn't you
post a link to it in your blog or share it on your Facebook page?
The amount of quality links and social signals pointing to a given
website helps Google determine how useful other humans find that
content, and therefore is a major factor when determining a
websites ranking.
This is why on-going link building is the back bone for any
successful SEO strategy. There are countless link building
techniques you can use and each one deserves a blog of its own.
What you should not do however is start submitting your website to
unrelated directories, buying links or get involved with link
farms. These links are easy to gain for a reason and if anything
could have a negative effect on your websites ranking. True link
building is an art form and if you want your website to rank
successfully in the long term you must implement a well-crafted,
content driven link building strategy.
Why is SEO important?
Nowadays, no matter what a customer wants, the internet and more
importantly search engines are becoming the first place they look.
That is why it is essential your business ranks well for keywords
your target customers are searching for.
